Welcome to Wakefield Dog Club

At Wakefield Dog Club we have something for everyone, whether you would like to teach your dog the basic obedience of a family pet or maybe even try your hand at competitions. A friendly atmosphere and a wide range of facilities are available at the club so we are sure there will be something for  you and your canine friend.

The Club was founded in 1958 by a group of enthusiasts who trained their dogs together. It was formed initially as WAKEFIELD AND DISTRICT CANINE TRAINING CLUB and the name was changed several years ago to the present name.
The object of the club was and still is to help people train their dogs at a reasonable cost and in turn help them to become responsible dog owners.
Over the years the club have helped thousands of owners to train their dogs. We cater for all breeds and cross breeds in all shapes and sizes. The breed or size of the dog you have chosen as your companion is not important, all dogs can be trained.
Most people who join the club do so originally because they want a well behaved pet. However, training a dog can become a pleasurable pass time. Ask any of our trainers why they first went to a dog club and they will tell you they only wanted a dog that would behave itself. So be warned, you might start here and one day end up at Crufts!

All our training is based on play and reward. Training a dog does take time and patience. It is not possible to train a dog in one hour each week at the training club. At the club we help, advise and show you our methods, the rest is up to you. Dogs are like children in respect of concentration, they only concentrate for short periods at a time. So a few minutes spent each day is the best way to get results, little and often is the key to good training.

For beginners we run an eight week induction course where you will be advised what equipment is required, how to begin to control your dog with hints and tips on grooming and caring for your dogs welfare. Your dog will also be taught to socialise with other dogs and people.

After completing the puppy foundation course you will then be eligible to join the classes for the Kennel Club Good Citizen Awards if you so choose. There are three levels, bronze, silver and gold. Assessments for these awards are carried out at regular intervals and are tested by an independent examiner. Dates and times are posted on the notice board in the Club but your trainer will keep you informed.

As you move through the levels and are able to control your dog you will be able to take part in Agility, Flyball, Competitive Obedience and Working Trials or our Ring Craft classes for showing. We also hold classes for Junior Handlers in Obedience. All our trainers here are experienced and regularly compete or judge at shows and trials.

We do hope that you will come along and make full use of our facilities and wish you the very best of luck with you and your dog in the future.
